Health Care Access Clinic's mission is to help facilitate access to health services for Douglas County residents with limited financial means who are not covered by private or governmental insurance programs.
In November of 1988, two little girls showed up in the borrowed room at Babcock Place where the Clinic started. These young sisters had no health insurance and their family had limited funds to pay for medical care, so they came to the start-up facility to get some help for a painful and potentially dangerous infection. A volunteer physician treated the infection and the girls returned to their normal school and home activities.
Today, one of those sisters is a student at KU Medical School and the other is attending KU's Law School. They are paying back the support they received from Health Care Access by setting and attaining high standards and by reaching out to help and serve others in their chosen professions.
The Health Care Access Clinic has had a lasting impact on these, and thousands of others, by providing help when needed and has helped to ensure that all our fellow community members have the opportunity to reach their full potential. Their success represents an amazing outcome for an organization that started 20 years ago in that small room with one volunteer and a budget of $500. This is a small bit of what the Health Care Access Clinic has accomplished. With 12,000 uninsured, working poor in our community, your help is needed just as much today.
The Health Care Access Clinic experienced an 11% increase in appointments in 2008 - another record setting year.
In 2008 our patients benefited from more than $4 million in services through the generosity of the volunteering medical community, tests and procedures at the hospital, donated medication, and countless volunteers. This is how we turn every $1 of funding into $7 worth of services - a 700% return on your investment. Ninety-six percent of our budget goes into patient programs and services while a mere 4% goes towards administration, management and fundraising. We can care for a patient for an entire year for just $360.
Thanks to committed and concerned neighbors like you we have served over 14,000 people over the past 20 years. You are an integral part of this community-wide effort. Thank you so much for your investment and being part of the solution to the problem of providing access to quality healthcare to so many in Douglas County.
